Head Massage & Scalp Massage

A head massage at Soul is deliberate, unhurried pressure worked over the scalp, temples, neck and shoulders by a trained therapist — and it comes inside every head spa ritual rather than as a rushed add-on. About 20 of the Signature's 60 minutes are massage, from $78 cash, at four studios in Mill Creek, Everett, Kirkland and Lynnwood, open seven days a week.

What the hands actually do

A professional head massage, stage by stage

Rubbing your own temples is instinct. A professional head massage is that instinct with technique, sequence and follow-through. At Soul it moves through five regions, in roughly this order, with Milbon treatment product as slip and the chair fully reclined at the basin:

  1. 01The scalp. Fingertip pressure in slow passes from the hairline back, lifting and moving the skin rather than skating over the hair — this is the scalp massage proper.
  2. 02The temples and brow. Small circles where concentration parks its tension, and where most guests first stop narrating the day.
  3. 03The base of the skull. The occipital ridge, where the neck muscles anchor — firm, held pressure rather than movement.
  4. 04The neck. Long strokes down both sides, which is where a “tight scalp” usually turns out to live.
  5. 05The shoulders. The top of the trapezius, the last stop before the warm hydrotherapy rinse. The Luxury ritual extends this into a full 30-minute upper-body massage; the Chinese Herb and Deep Clean rituals add the arms and hands.

Pressure is set to you at the start and changes the moment you ask. Short hair simply means more of the hour goes to these five stages. The practice itself — its lineage, what a session includes, the two-minute home version — is mapped in our head massage guide, and the research on the scalp-and-neck work specifically in scalp massage benefits.

Three terms, one chair

Head massage, scalp massage, head spa

The words get used interchangeably online and they shouldn't quite be. A scalp massage is hands-on work on the skin of the head itself. A head massage adds the temples, neck and shoulders — the places the tension that shows up as a tight scalp actually comes from. A head spa is the whole 60-to-90-minute ritual that wraps both inside a cleanse, an exfoliation, a treatment, a warm-water hydrotherapy rinse and a blow-dry. At Soul, booking any ritual gets you all three; what is a Japanese head spa gives the plain definition if the category is new to you.

If you want hands and nothing else, the other honest route is a full-body massage with the hour focused on neck and shoulders — $75 cash for 60 minutes with a Washington-licensed massage therapist, on a table rather than at a basin, with no water involved. Tell the front desk which you're after and they will book the right room.

Why people book it

What a head massage does — and what we won't claim

The reliable part is relaxation. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health's plain-language summary of massage therapy finds the firmest evidence in short-term relief of muscle tension and in stress reduction, and Mayo Clinic's overview of relaxation techniques describes the slowed breathing and dropped shoulders that guests report by the time the hands reach the base of the skull. Many guests with tension-type headaches say the neck-and-shoulder work leaves them looser; Mayo Clinic's tension headache guidance lists massage among the approaches people try, and our headache guide sets out the red flags that belong with a doctor instead.

What we won't claim: that head massage regrows hair, cures migraines or treats any condition. What it does, every time, is give one patch of skin that never gets any attention twenty unhurried minutes of it — in a private room, with the door shut, followed by warm water.

Massage services at Soul are performed by Washington-licensed massage therapists, and our scalp-care team has worked with Milbon professional products since the first studio opened in 2021. Soul is a relaxation and wellness spa, not a medical provider. Our services support relaxation and general well-being; they don't diagnose or treat medical conditions. Talk with your doctor about persistent scalp, skin, or pain concerns.

FAQ

Head massage questions

Do you offer a head massage on its own?
Not as a separate line item. At Soul the head massage is built into every head spa ritual — roughly 20 of the Signature's 60 minutes go to head, neck and shoulder work, and the 90-minute Luxury opens with a 30-minute upper-body massage before the scalp stages begin. The Signature at $78 cash is the shortest route to a professional head massage on our menu.
How long is the head massage part of a head spa?
About 20 minutes of the 60-minute Signature, worked across the scalp, temples, the ridge at the base of the skull, the neck and the shoulders. The 90-minute rituals add more hands-on time — the Luxury's 30-minute upper-body massage, and arm and hand massage in the Chinese Herb and Deep Clean Scalp rituals.
Is a scalp massage the same thing as a head massage?
Close enough that we treat them as one service. A scalp massage works the skin of the head itself; a head massage usually adds the temples, neck and shoulders, where the tension that shows up as a tight scalp actually lives. Every Soul ritual does both, with Milbon scalp products as slip and warm hydrotherapy water to finish.
Can I ask for more massage and less of everything else?
Yes — tell your therapist at the start. Pressure and focus are set to you, and a guest with short hair naturally gets more of the hour as massage because the cleanse and treatment stages take less time. If what you really want is a full hour of hands-on work, a 60-minute full-body massage at $75 cash with the focus on neck and shoulders is the other honest option.
Does head massage help with headaches?
Many guests with tension-type headaches say the neck-and-shoulder work helps them feel looser, and Mayo Clinic lists massage among the approaches people try for tension headaches. It is not a treatment for any condition, and a headache unlike your usual ones belongs with a doctor first. Our guide to massage for tension headaches sets out the evidence honestly.
How much does a head massage cost at Soul?
It comes inside the head spa price: $78 cash or $88 by card for the 60-minute Signature, and $135 cash or $145 by card for any 90-minute ritual. Prices are identical at all four Washington studios, seven days a week, and gratuity is not included.

Book the ritual that carries the massage

Start with the 60-minute Signature — about 20 minutes of head, neck and shoulder massage inside it — or the 90-minute Luxury for a full half hour of upper-body work first.
